Hi Sheila,
I have been pondering the answer to this question since it was first posted and my feeling about this is:
I don't really think people have a fear of success, my thinking is more so that they have a fear of the time and money it takes to invest in a new business challenge.

I had a friend of mine sign up a few months ago. Before I even had time to send my welcome letter he had opted right out of everything stating that he had no time to do this business. I think that a lot of affiliates sign up, see all of the material and get confused. They don't even give the sponsors a chance to give them a hand before they decide it is too much....this is the time investment of what I was talking about.

Monetary wise, a new affiliate will stay in usually for roughly two months, in which they can achieve EA by doing all of the ledger items. Once they realize after month two that they potentially have to spend some money now to reach EA, they soon do not show up on the mover list any longer.

I have been involved in many various businesses over the years, some of which I gave my all to and others I kind of let go to the wayside. Those of which I gave my all to, I figured had great potential, the others after joining decided they were not really for me. It wasn't a fear of success that hindered me in any of these other businesses, I just had to really believe in what I was doing and selling. If you can't get excited about your own business, then who will?

Your own enthusiasm filters through your team and gives them a positive outlook on what they are doing and trying to achieve.

Hi Sheila,

Thank you for this question and it made me think.

Fear is generated when expectations are not reached. For example as a team Sponsor/team leader we face this challenge every month if not every day. Because we expect growth in our business and we expect success.
And when we expect our team to be active and when they are not...sort of our expectations bring fears.

To overcome these fears what I do:
# Log in daily and do my weekly, monthly, and all other task on my to-do-list. That keeps me busy, accumulates points that benefits me and my up line. I do not want my up line to fear success. They got to have it and they deserve it.

# maintain my EA every month and try to, every month until I am able to get to the next level.

# I participate in Forum and ASK SQ whenever possible to keep a lively connection with SFI.

# I advertise and participate in websites that gives points with which I can advertise my business online.

# I also connect with other business online to get some traffic generating and may be cash to feed my SFI Accounts. Since I am retired and do not have enough income to do it alone. But I am not giving up I am employed in the internet businesses to keep me busy and get my business going.

# I always keep a positive attitude that I can do it and that I can be an example for people coming behind me and a help and support to my up line. In a matter of fact I do everything to keep a successful thoughts in my mind and always keep myself cheerful in what I do.

# I keep communicating with my team members weekly. Hoping the best for them and I am always available to help them and advice if they need any assistance.

And last and not the least I believe in prayer and I do talk to my Father in Heaven for guidance and strength and that is the reason I am able to overcome fears. It is said we must have faith be strong in what we believe in and do, and fear is just the opposite so I'd rather believe have faith in myself and my associates to be successful. If not today, then tomorrow but one day we will conquer and be successful.

IMHO, I strongly know that most people fear starting something new and when they
are overwhelm with information or instructions, they will start to find excuses
to delay their process. It's a familiar scenario in every affiliate program.

This is made worse when the "new leader" who is a newbie themselves tries to exert
pressure or authority on the newer one (who might even be more experience)

To become successful, one must find the balance to learn themselves and using that
knowledge to teach others so that it becomes duplicable. As long as they have 3 to 5
people doing exactly what they are doing then success is already a done deal. So, there is nothing to fear about!

If you make that statement in a normal conversation with people they might look at you as if you are loosing your marbles. They might even tell you that much - but the truth is you are 100% right. It does not make sense does it?

You would think a fear of failure would be what is holding people back but it is not. It just gives them an excuse. It is easier to deal with failure if that is what you expect.

Now imagine you are used to failures and here is an opportunity for you to actually succeed. In the 1st place you are going to think, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. How do you handle an experience if you never dealt with it before? It is not as if they sit there and think I am scared to succeed, no its deep down, they are not even aware of it. I don't mean this nasty or condescending - they need therapy to recognise it before they can do something about it. Like with every problem in life the 1st step is to admit the problem - even if you don't know what it actually is. It is a blockage that needs to be removed - which you can not do.

Does that mean you can do nothing? Certainly not. Take it easy, baby steps, with every small step they take and see success it will give them a taste of how sweet success is and slowly but surely you help them to achieve success. If it happens gradually it is not so scary, it almost happens without them realizing that they are conquering a fear they did not even realize they had.

If somebody has a fear of water - are you going to take him out on a boat and dump him in the middle of the ocean? Of course not - you will slowly but surely get them used to water so they can see if you use your head there is nothing to be scared of.

You probably mean Fear of not being successful, because many would love to be successful.

The best way to help our members to get past through this fear is to let them experience small steps that they could accomplish.

SFI has many small steps of achievements, you can see this on the badges awarded to us everytime we achieve something. Start with the easiest badge like daily versa points streak badge, then the a2a member badge. Then let them join the daily grands until they win and wear the DG badge.

Then you move to the more challenging badges like being a fast tracker member and the rank badges.

Aside from earning the badges you can also start challenging them to recruit 1 or 2 affiliates in one week. Then it is important to reward them for what they have done that you ask them to do.

These small successes will give them confidence and will thirst for more successes.

In my opinion, it is not really a fear of success. It is a fear of the unknown. Or the fear of taking too much risks. Hence we need to make known to them that the risk on their side is quite low.

They need to know how exactly we do our work. What does it entails everyday. How much investment is needed. I know we said no investment ever which can be done but sometimes we need to be realistic. No investment, slow success.

Make clear to your team so that the unknown is now known. And the risks is understood to be low. Nothing in this world is with no risk. Even getting into your car everyday is a risk, but you accept that risk because you have done your homework (i.e learn to drive, etc).

Fear of success, or fear of failure?

I can't imagine anyone seriously pursuing the business without a measure of confidence and optimism. However, those that "dabble" may indeed have that fear of failure, hence the lack of committment.

Do you have those affiliates that are there every month, but they never seem to have much more than 100 VP? This is a POSSIBLE case of fear of failure. they keep dabbling because they WANT to believe, but never go far because they don't think they can.

Praise, and gentle tips will help some. Harshness will only drive these types further into their fears.

Be patient and kind. Confidence may come with time.

This is a great questions hence most of us are aware that Fear of success is a major problem here if you feel that you are not in the right line and lack of knowledge of how this program works.

1.I would suggest that never mention any negativity to your team as it can create negativity result instead advise them to log in daily and keep on learning on how this program works for you. Read the Forum daily and learn from the expert/Guru and get more information as they have more experience.

2. Share your big wins, tactics and ideas to motivate your team like e.g ( how to maintain your EA rank by purchasing single TCredits for the remaining points, how to improve and get more commissions etc) as this is what affiliates like to hear all the time

3. Talk business all the time

4. Reward your top 5 movers by sending free Tcredits. Provide gift certificate for those who become EA for the month.

5. Create a good relationship as this is also the way to create duplication.
6. Feel to be lucky all day and invite the positivity.

It is very good that you are getting to know the motivations of your team members. . Many times people sign up for SFI just to see what it is. I would like to answer your question “What if my team member had a fear of success. “ We can best help them if we know their desires and fears. Most people do not have a fear of success; there may be a fear of stepping outside of their comfort zone. Here are my suggestions:
The first step to overcoming fear is to find out their desires and dreams for their life. You are very fortunate that you are engaging in a conversation. Here are some questions to ask:
1. Are they currently happy with their job?
2. Have they had their own business?
3. What would they like to be doing within 5 to 6 years?
4. Would they like to promote products online?
Let them know how to earn a living from SFI.
• Bidding in auctions
• Playing trivia games.
• Finding new stores that would live to join the ecommerce program.
• Promoting products
• Promoting the business opportunity.
SFI does not charge a membership fee. SFI does encourage you to invest in your business. But that he or she does not have to invest until they feel comfortable.
Find out how much time he or she can dedicate to their business.
Talk about the various was to promote SFI. It is best to only use one system and master that one system. Some examples are through social media2 or a personal blog. Trying to master more than one skill at a time can cost money and time.
Let them know that there is no need to tell friends or family members about their business until he or she is ready. Family members or friends may be the least supportive because this is something new.

I would say in life, fear is the biggest barrier to many challenges and certainly overcoming one’s fears is a step in the right direction. But I am not sure that many affiliates who do not remain active or quit too soon are doing it out of fear of success. Nothing can change in a person’s life until that person chooses to and in my opinion the biggest hindrance to change is fear of the unknown and many people stay in the same position because of this kind of fear. In many ways those people who have a fear of success are also afraid of the unknown when they become successful. Will they be able to handle success? For example, if a person gets to a position of influence in which his or her decisions affect the welfare of others, the biggest fear for that person is whether he or she has what it takes to make the right decisions. That person can certainly overcome those fears by learning from others (where the difficult lies) and applying themselves. A few mistakes here and there should not make one fall but rather learn and move forward.
The team leader should certainly minimise fear of the unknown in their team members by not overloading them with information and by being supportive rather than putting pressure on them. If they ask questions it is a good idea to respond to their queries. The team leader’s success should inspire team members to do the same.
