There is no secret formula. Send them a message, or E-Card (my preferred method) the minute you get the notice of them joining.
The first few minutes is what I call the HOT WINDOW. That window of time when they are logged on and checking out the site. If they are not impressed by what they see, they may never come back. If they know someone cares, it carries a lot of weight!
