For me personally I like to be friendly with them... If you act like you are the boss and they HAVE TO listen you,and you are really strict about that, you have to change...
I like that I am a friend with my sponsor and I can ask whatever and she will have answer and she is really polite.. with my downline I talk like they are my friends from school and we share hearts and many other loving emoticons ,it's really better to be friendly then bossy.
And I recommend you to create a group on facebook for your friends and talk with them In that way,it's much easier :)
