We've grown up hearing the saying, "Monkey see, monkey do." But in SFI it's not that easy. When we want our PSAs and CSAs to duplicate what we do and teach it to their PSAs and CSAs, then we really have to focus their attention upon what we want them to take into their routines. And there are many, many things that fall within that category.
Looking at our badges gives us an idea of the different categories that must be covered when teaching duplication. It's not enough to just say, "Do what I do. Earn the badges I earned." Many new affiliates have not seen the importance of the badges, have not looked into how to earn them, and think they are purely for bragging.
As part of the lessons about duplication, they should be directed to look at the badges, the sponsor should tell why each set of badges, keyed by color, is important for a leader and what needs to be done to earn them.
As part of the preparation for teaching this, the sponsor should gather as many of the badges as possible, each with a respectable ranking. Then he can tell his team what he did to earn them, and why he thinks they are important.
The badges cover the obvious things that should be duplicated, but there are other things that a sponsor does that may not be seen by everyone of his team. What comes to mind now is the willingness for a sponsor to treat his team members as individuals while he is dealing with the team as a whole. We write team mail. A PSA who never communicates with his sponsor may not know how wisely his sponsor can answer individuals with questions. A PSA who never visits his sponsor's Leadership Page may not know the wisdom of having contests with rewards to stimulate the affiliates. These things and more are part of an awesome sponsor's tool chest, but those who don't participate won't know or duplicate them.
So a sponsor must also tell the team in his team mail what he is doing, encourage them to not only participate in those activities, but also to use them as tools in their own leadership. Don't leave it for them to figure out.
