Fact is SFI sends business e-mails in a niche that is notorious for SPAM and has made a lot of enemies over the years out of scammers, cheats, and people who simply didn't follow instructions well enough or long enough to make any money. As a result, until the affiliate logs in and starts their training and gets to the point where they verify their SFI Account and white-list SFIMG.com they may not even see a welcome letter or e-card sent by the system.
Meanwhile I have my own e-mail account on my own domain name and I have zero SPAM complaints and can write content with a score lower than 3 on a 5 scale used for rating e-mail copy as spam or safe. My e-mails almost always go to the inbox and I write headlines that catch attention so sending from my own e-mail address simply makes sense.
I can use a canned reply the same as having a stored welcome letter at SFI to save time but if I know the person from a social network or from the coffee shop down town I can add in a personal welcome that shows I care and noticed it was them too. This makes that form letter less formal and more personal and can be a difference maker in terms of strengthening a working relationship.
Conversion wise I get far more response back sending an e-mail from my personal account than I do from team mail.
