When you personally contact a new recruit you can often learn a lot about them that will help in motivation later on. You will also be able to share important details tailored to your new PSA, based on any information they have already given. You will also have the ability to translate your message into a different language if you see that your PSA speaks French, Farsi, Serbian etc... With the bulk mailer you don't get that luxury.
If you are close and personal with your PSA you will find they become more engaged as your friendship blossoms. They will be more open to asking you questions and to trying new things and will be less likely to just walk away, because walking away may disapoint their new friends.
I personally have only used the bulk approach once and I can tell you the results were horrible compared to my individual messages. Even using the SFI Welcome E-cards does better than using the Team Mailer but the best results come when I send from my e-mail address which is never blocked as SPAM and almost always get's opened.
