i think "What have you been doing ?" is a question asked as often abroad as it
is here in India. Clearly, half your job is done already even though the inquiry
is more often than not "absolutely casual";
i have had occasions when i replied "awfully bad" and this statement is accepted
with absolute grace - without as much as any further "...but what happened ?" or
"can i offer any help ?"... no one is really interested UNLESS it involves some
self-interest.
But even then, if you have done your ground-work well - like i have - the reply
would be something that the inquirer ( and a few others present ) might also be
hugely interested in:
Begin casually, "Oh well, i just won an ounce of silver worth $25 for 70 cents
in an auction." and once full attention of everyone around is focussed on what
you have just said, you can become slightly more enthusiastic, "But i wish that
i had bid for the TV that went for only 5 dollars". A pregnant pause and one can
add, "Well... not exactly $ 5 - it was actually $5.07 plus a few measly dollars
towards the cost of bidding."
After this "approach", you are merely left with the not too difficult task that involves showing your 1 Oz. SFI silver bar and answering the eager queries with
casual sincerity.
Of course, the cards will need to be distributed to all the interested persons.
And do not forget to reassure them with,"YOU can approach me whenever YOU need."
