Maybe it's just me but I haven't had much luck chatting with anyone with the IM Chat. I do realize though that they usually see where I tried to contact them. I do think it's good to have that initial personal contact with them though. So what I do is send them an IM message welcoming them to my team and tell them that I have sent them an email to their personal email that will help them get started off on the right foot.
