I think there is merit in becoming a team leader before one has affiliates in his team. There are some obvious monetary reasons, but they will be very small to non-existent with no real team.
The real value, I feel, of become an early team leader and maintaining it is in preparation for the time when you are actually a team leader. Most new affiliates will look at your profile, see how long you've been in, and what your rank is. They want to be lead by an experienced leader. They are more likely to contact you and follow what you say. The longer you can be a TL, the more confidence they have in you.
The longer time before you have a team filled with active members will give you more time to practice your leadership skills. Being positive and able to turn the negatives into positives. Being an encourager and helping your team to have confidence in themselves. Learning the ways of SFI and internet marketing. Developing effective letters that will be sent to your team when they get into SFI, when you reassign someone to them, when you are an encourager and must give pointers for an affiliate to change something. And so on.
Always use this time to improve your performance as a Team Leader. And someday, you will look at your Genealogy and see, not the inactives, but that it is speckled with successful people.
