This a good question. I wondered about that myself when I was a new affiliate back in 2012.
At that time we kept our Versa Points total forever and didn't have to lose some after 6 months.
Versa Points are not something that you collect to earn more money or even prestige. They are to measure your activity on a monthly basis to work out your commissions check or pay-out.
If you have a standing order of 1500 VP per month or more you will ensure your EA2 status so that you will receive commissions. As you sponsor and help PSAs, CSAs, ECAs, TripleClicks affiliates etc. on your team, this is how you will bring in more commissions. It's not only your own VP, but the VP and commissions each month of the whole team you are leading and helping. It's the activity of everyone on your team who are EA2 and above, CSAs, ECAs and TripleClicks affiliates.
There are many other ways to earn income but this not an answer to the question. Let me just comment that income is more important than earning Badges and Versa Points.
