To start with, there is a Welcome Letter that should be sent to a New PSA. When Affiliates sign up in SFI, SFI itself sends them a Welcome Message. However, it is most important that the Sponsor sends his/her personal Message to the new PSA welcoming them to the scheme and pledging to assist them. I believe since SFI has sent their own Welcome Message through the system; sending another Welcome Message through SFI may seem to the new PSA as auto response. Using Sponsor's Email id to send Welcome mail to their Email id shows you are an individual, not machine; and thus start the process of bonding between the PSA and the Sponsor. (But, if you sponsor in tens and hundreds, you may not have option than to send them a group mail).
SFI PSA mailer is great. A good Sponsor should send periodic follow up and Training mails to his/her PSAs at least weekly. It would be cumbersome to send individual mails to a group of 50,100, 200 or more PSAs individually. In this case, the PSA Mailer is a better alternative. Apart from the ease of use, you also get the weekly 30 Action VersaPoints for it. It has another advantage that apart from delivery to Email ids, it is stored in their SFI Message Center; so if they miss one, they cannot miss the other.
But, there are instances the PSA needs peculiar attention or has asked for clarification of some aspects of the opportunity, it is most appropriate to reply or explain things through their Email id. Also, most of us have our Email on the go. With our Smartphones we can easily access our mails without having to log in every time. Contacting PSAs through their Email ids allow you to quickly receive their mails and responds quickly unlike waiting till you log on to SFI Affiliate Center; and then click on messages, before you could respond to them.
Finally, contacting them through their Email id gives you the opportunity of easily connecting them on their social networks like facebook, twitter, google+ etc. The social media platform easily associates you together because there has been communication with mails between you, especially when you are on gmail. You could leverage these social media to train them further and thus help attract some of their friends to join them and ultimately your bigger team.
In summary, both the SFI PSA Mailer and Email id communication are good and suitable depending on the time, circumstances and purpose of the communications.
