Not all brands are readily available in all countries and since some brands offer better quality and service after the sale, buying abroad may be a sound financial choice even if you do have to pay high shipping cost. I can buy a large mixer for around $200 through local retailers to bake cakes and breads with for example but I know I can get a Hobart Mix Master for around $600 shipped to me from out of state and it will last 12 times longer than the $200 mixer I can get in town.

I have personally staked out some great deals on Indian style jewelry and Australian Gem Stones that I can turn around for a profit at our local gem and mineral shows and swap meets. For personal use you can buy ethnic themed items from cultures not represented in your local market, and in many cases you can bring those items to market locally and sell them at a premium price.
A great example here in the U.S. is French Perfume and German Cars. Many of these items sell for 2-5 times the price of nearly identical items made here in the U.S. because they are deemed exotic and sold for a premium. Here in Arizona we have people who take a truck across the border and buy pottery from Mexico for $3-$20 per piece and sell it just across the border for 3-5 times what they paid for it because you can't get those unique items here.
