Effective intercultural communication often takes considerable time, energy and commitment. You need to be prepared for new situations with people from other cultures and co-cultures and this will increase your confidence in your ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people.
You can first conduct an honest assessment of your own communication styles and beliefs since your own attitudes toward different cultures influence your communication with them. Practice supportive communication behaviors such as empathy, kindness, etc. Be a good listener.
One healthy communication perspective holds that you can learn something from all people. Diverse populations provide ample opportunity for learning. Therefore, develop sensitivity toward diversity. Challenge yourself; you may be surprised by what you learn. Use and encourage descriptive feedback.
This encourages adaptation. Be willing to exhibit supportive behaviors. Feedback should be immediate, honest, specific and clear. By adopting some of these strategies I believe that your CSAs will be drawn to you and you will gain their attention. Soon you will have a list of movers!
