I also happen to have this level of experience so I do have an opinion based on my own results. My first exposure to this type of business was in 1981 when I attended a meeting designed to introduce me to the "business opportunity". Over the years I produced results with the above methods, but I then moved toward advertising and sending out information packets and found that to be considerably more effective. Then came the internet and everything changed! My experience is that internet marketing is more effective than traditional advertising or the methods mentioned above! However, that does not mean that the traditional methods of marketing this type of business are not effective. They are very effective, but I would say that internet marketing is more effective!
With internet marketing you:
1) Have better control over your time. Work when you want!
2) Your business can spread quickly all around the world. This eliminates single points of failure due to natural, economic or political issues. The sun never sets on your business!
3) You can operate your business from any location around the world. I work a lot at local coffee shops.
4) No dress code!
5) Here's the BIG reason why I have found internet marketing to be more effective. Once you learn to setup lead systems you can grow your advertising as much as you want. This is called "scaling up" your advertising and it's VERY powerful. You can then Co-op with your group and gain massive leverage.
I did have success with what I call local based techniques. However, when I discovered mail order marketing I was full-time within a few years. Internet marketing has only made things more effective which means more income, time and location freedom!
