I don't think that there is too much or unnecessary communication!
I appreciate the time my sponsor and co-sponsor takes to send me messages, even personal e-mails!
It shows me they do care and by sharing what they do and great tips that I have received from them!
That is why I send out weekly e-mails to my team, team mail and have some on facebook and I also encouraged some of them to get Skype.
That way you get to know them better, see that it is real people you are working with!
So from my point of view - Keep the communication flowing!!!
