In my opinion, any communication you send to your team members should be either informational (about SFI, of course), educational, inspirational or to acknowledge them for some achievement.
What I consider to be "too much" or "unnecessary" communication is communication that does not fit into the above categories, and information that goes into far too much detail. People can only handle small bits of information when learning, so the shorter and more to the point you can make it, the better.
I say avoid long, long messages: keep them short. And avoid trying to cover too many points in one message: choose one key point to focus on and express it as clearly and briefly as possible.
Break your message up into short paragraphs and keep the whole message focused on explaining or emphasizing that one key point.
