I don't believe a new affiliate is good or bad. I DO believe any affiliate has to have the desire, patience, and perseverance to become a success in their own home business. If none of us have those qualities, we wouldn't be very good, either!
There is a 'but', though. Being an excellent Sponsor can go a long way, too. I not only send Team Mails, and personal emails, but I also chat with mine very often. If I see any that are online, I start a chat with them to see if they need my help, or to encourage them that they are doing a great job. I offer Incentives/Rewards to them, as well as on my Leadership page as a contest. Encouraging them, rewarding them, and staying in contact is VERY important if you want to keep them. Motivation is key...Keep them Motivated, as I've stated here, like I do. I need them, as much as they need me, if we're going to make our Team a successful business! I'm not in this alone, and they shouldn't be, either.
