The best way to motivate your downline is first to let them know that you adknowledge that they are there. When I say this, you have to always give them the ATTENTION that they need. When they have a problem, you have to be willing to LISTEN, and be willing to do all that you can to HELP them out.
You have to gain your downline's CONFIDENCE in you. Once they gain this CONFIDENCE in you this is a true MOTIVATION for them to want to DUPLICATE you and bring more people in to increase your downline.
A big word of advice is to not tell someone to do something if they don't see you doing it. This is a big turn off. In other words, "Practice What You Preach."
