I love this question! Communicating through internet based methods are different then having a 1:1 chat with a person face to face. Still, listening is such an important part of our role as sponsor and mentor.
My suggestions are these:
1. Ask probing questions ... so that you can try to get a better understanding of where the person you are communicating with is coming from. This also helps to establish a connection.
I have been amazed at some of the stories and some of the replies I have received when I send out a team mail or individual mail asking probing questions. My favorite to date is when I sent out an e-mail asking "If I had a Million Dollars..." Simply fantastic! Anyway, I think you get the point.
2. Read responses for understanding from the sender's point of view and not with our own agenda. In our eagerness to promote our business and seek out growth I think at times we can forget to listen in the moment of the other's perspective or present state of being. Again, making a connection is so important. Whatever it takes to make that connection I think is well worth the effort.
3. Always respond back to anyone who reaches out to you.
4. Keep an eye on the activity of those you are engaging in conversation with. Check out their profiles and VP Ledger along with their badges. This tells you something about them which again helps to guide you as you are making the connection.
5. Lastly, offer different methods for people to reach out and connect with you ... Team Mail, e-mail, social media, Messenger in SFI chat, etc. Whatever it takes ... make the connection.
