Well for me paid advertising with a company called Linkbucks has worked wonders. I recruited almost 1750 in less that two weeks. It also depends which country you target. Linkbucks uses country targeted traffic and a different kind of advertising which is called Intermission Advertising. At $0.20 - $3.60 per 1000 impressions I think its well worth the investment.
