The best way to use money is to apply it to your current plan. If I had $500 to invest in my SFI business at this point, it would probably be spent on doing a production run of the next set of products for my ECA store, for example. However, you may be at a different phase in your plan. If I was in an advertising phase, I might instead use that money to put together a website and blog dedicated to my efforts at SFI and then advertising that blog; as such, it could be used as a training resource for your downline as well as a recruitment tool for new PSAs. If, on the other hand, I needed to improve my development process, I might invest in new hardware, like a printer so that I could produce more of my own promotional materials. The most important thing, from my point of view, is to turn that $500 into something that will give you something you can use.
