I'm actually a very knowledgeable person in that area due to my recently having spent so much time researching this. I'm in the process of setting up an ECA that will sell TE traffic and I'm making my own new Traffic Exchange site too.
There are many TE sites and you should join a number of them. DON'T immediately upgrade! Check the site out as a free member first. You might find that site doesn't work well for you and you'll be able to move on. Upgrade later to earn more credits AFTER you're comfortable with the TE.
What to look for:
1. Surf the site and watch for SFI ads to come up. If they are too frequent then that TE site might be saturated with SFI. If the SFI business gateways are the only ones coming up, then you might consider going with an ECA gateway, a shopping gateway or a pricebender gateway. (Remember that there are more than one way to earn with SFI)
2. If the TE site has a top surfer bar, then note what the high numbers are. If some of the spots have 0 hits or less than 100 then it is either early in the day or it's telling you that there are few surfers on that TE site. If the spots are all in the high hundreds or even in the thousands then you might be concerned that the really big numbers could represent robot-clickers or power-surfers and neither of those will help you much.
3 Take full advantage of the promotions. Watch for the emails and copy/past the surf codes to get the special deals. Look on the TE site's home page for surf codes.
4 MAKE NOTES. Look in the 'surf rewards' to know how many clicks you need to do to get the reward you want. The highest numbers are often not the best value. Click to the number you've previously decided on and then move on to another TE site.
