The biggest advantages of having your own domain is that you don't have to deal with the other websites blocking your your link when you post.
Other benefits: you can create your own site as you want, with what you want although I'm hearing that a person has to be careful because Google likes to throw it's weight around and changes the rules for how things are on the internet. I've got no experience in this area, because I don't want to deal with Google's lack of respect. I find ways to work around it and still make money with my business.
