In my day job I've been in Sales on both sides. First I was the supplier and had to keep my customers happy and now I am the customer and my suppliers have to keep me happy.
My 1st tip: LISTEN - you can not believe how many people do not listen to their customers. I learned that when I was a waitress believe it or not. So when I entered the corporate world I knew that you have to listen to your customers and that helped me to be successful in customer care, internal Sales.
2nd tip: KNOW your product. If they ask a question and you do not know the answer be honest and tell them and them go and find the answer. Do not suck stuff out of your thumb because it will come back to bite you.
3rd tip: Do not make promises you can not deliver on. You will loose face and trust.
4th: Believe in your product. If you would not use it - don't try to sell it to somebody else.
5th Learn how to recognise the signs that somebody needs a little more information or convincing and that they are ready for you to close the deal.
These tips are for face to face selling. Online selling is a bit different. With online selling you have to grab their attention immediately with your advertisement and then the product needs to sell itself.
With online selling you need to pick keywords that will bring people to your advertisement.
Your advertisement needs to peak their curiosity without them having to read a book before they know what you are advertising.
As it is in face to face selling - do not try to sell something you do not believe in and would not purchase yourself.
