SFI is a business. That alone should answer your question, but here are some more thoughts.
A - ANY business will die if it is not maintained. How are you going to produce an income with SFI? Do you think the world knows of your membership and will flock to you? You have to send out the word. Without new members your business will die.
B - ANY business will go stagnant if it is is not maintained. Why do you think there are so many commercials on tv and radio? They have customers. If you are not growing, you are going stagnant.
C - ANY business will die if there is no investment. Investment can be time, it can be money, it can be a combination. Investment means to "expend money with the expectation of achieving a profit".
I suspect that you already know these things. Every successful Leader at SFI makes an investment!
