The way to pick a scam from a legit business, is if they are asking for a sign-up fee. If they are, it is a scam. SFI does not ask you for this - it is totally free to join (so there is a good reason to focus on SFI to start with).
Many businesses expect/demand a continuous input of funds. SFI does not. They RECOMMEND a Standing Order of 1500VP, but you are not obligated if you don't want to, you will just have to work harder to get to the targets for each rank.
