How do you start a conversation with someone whom you do not know?
I am sure that everyone has their own approach, but when I initiate an online chat I start introducing myself. Even though they may see this, I still tell them my name and tell them that I am their (Co-) Sponsor. I tell them that I am happy to catch them online and that I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a quick hello. Further, I ask them how they are experiencing SFI so far and also ask them whether there is anything I can help them with.
I always like to keep the introduction light and airy, so that people do not feel uncomfortable. This way you have more chance to connect, I find.
I have noticed at times that people are not very willing to chat. I believe that this mostly happens when someone does not feel comfortable writing in a foreign language.
If I notice this then I shall let it rest. I then proceed to end the chat by saying once again that if there is anything I can help them with, that they should not hesitate to get in touch and leave them my e-mail address.
You see… if people do not feel comfortable writing in a foreign language it is more difficult to chat than to send an e-mail. With an e-mail they have more time to think and use google translate if necessary.
