You always use both if the auction out for bidding allows auto-bidding. The question is when to use auto-bidding.
Generally there is no fixed rules that can be followed. Biding is very dynamic, it's a tactics. You are fighting real live people who are outsmarting each other. But there are indicators when to use auto-bidding.
This will greatly depend on your purpose. If you want to established your name use auto-bidder until you win the item. This is very risky and you must have a lot of TC. You do this several times and soon you will be winning the items at low prices. Simply because no body or very few will contest you if they see you name bidding.
BUT if you have limited TC you must be patient in waiting for the right time to use your auto bidder. You wait till the time is already going towards the end. You will notice it when the time said "going once, going twice.." 3 to 4 times.
While waiting for the timer to wind up to the end, you must get ready to prevent the last bidder to win. You bid in between the going once... going twice notice. If there are still many bidders doing what you did, usually it not the right time yet. Because there are still many waiting as you do.
If in only 1 or two left who bid in bet going once... going twice notice then its time to unload you auto-bidder. But be ready to stop it once there is some one challenging you again by not even letting be the last bidder to reach the end of the timer.
So patience and timing and being smart, observing your oponents is the key and you must have at least 200TC to be successful.
