Do yourself a favor and sit down with a magazine and look at the advertisements. Some of them will immediately peak your interest and you will not just glance at them but you will take a 2nd look. Some of them will immediately irritate you. Some will not have any effect on you.
Now look at them again - what drew you in the ones you liked?
What repelled you in the ones that irritated you?
Why do you feel nothing about the rest?
Personally - colors, big bold letters, interesting patterns or pictures draw me in.
A lot of reading and difficult reading because of small letters or funny fonts immediately irritate me
Boring dull advertisements make me yawn - I don't like them, I don't hate them - I see them and move on.
Your best guideline is YOU - if you hate it others will too, if you like it so will others.
