A great question and probably one which a lot of us ask ourselves. Here is what I do.
In the first instance I go through my house and sell anything that I think might be interesting to my prospective customers and which I have not used for some time and obviously no longer need it myself. The item need not be new but must be in good condition. I then check the new price and divide it by at least 4. This is the price I will then advertise it for. If it is listed for say one month and hasn't sold, then I will discount the price a little further or perhaps add a free gift.
I go to popular sales sites and see what items are selling. I check out the rate of sales for a particular seller and I check out their ratings. I then make a decision on what to sell. I check the sales prices of these items and reduce my prices by at least 10%.
These ideas do not necessarily make sales but they are a start. Once you find an item which starts to sell, then I would upload more of this item as it can then become one of your best sellers.
Dropshipping is an option to obtain products but you need to do your homework in this area and much research to make sure you are dealing with a reputable provider. In this regard you can go to Forums and Feedback to see how the provider is rated. I have dealt with several dropship companies myself and only one so far failed to deliver the product. I no longer deal with this company as it caused much angst with the buyer from my site. As I said, dropshipping is a great way to obtain products but do your homework and make sure you state in your advertising that the product may be shipped from overseas and delivery times can be up to one month.
