I think this is not the real question. You have to build a team anyway at the end of the day and you need at least 1500 VP each month. These two goals have to be harmonized somehow, so the real question is: how should I get 1500 VP to build my team most efficiently?
Now the answer is much simpler. If you have to buy something anyway for 1500 VP, you may try buying PSA-s directly, buying co-op shares or buying TC-s and try to win the same in auction. Even less direct approach is buying hit packs for your blogs or SFI splashpages - it is already closer to sponsoring yourself.
If you have these 1500 VP, direct purchasing is not necessary and your decision is about whether you better trust professional recruiting methods you don't control or perhaps "less pro" but fully controlled by you.
The latter has certain advantages: if you use mailers, blogs or your own splashpages, you may transmit your personal message, "brand yourself" and stay out from the crowd even before sign-ups.
Therefore my final answer is: sponsor yourself anyway, you cannot avoid that. Buy PSA directly for VP-s sake or bulk purchases only.
