While one has got to be extremely careful about how they approach this issue I think it's still OK and important according to me that your affiliates get to know about this for the benefit of their businesses. It's all about how you do it.

If you have cared for your Affiliates right from the day of joining and offered them all of the necessary help and support, answered every question that they have asked and even offered Incentives, you stand a better chance in advising them to Invest further. That way everyone wins. They will not think you are trying to ripe them off for your own selfish benefits.
Secondly, this is just the same as running a successful email campaign to your list if you had any other business. If you don't nurture your list well and are always bombarding them with offers about this and that. Sorry your chances are very limited unless that affiliate is one that has decided to pursue his/her business without your motivation. You might end up having many unsubscribes.
Lastly, I would never emphasis how enough important it is for one to lead by example. they will look into your badge wall and judge you based on what you have. I have realized that whenever I didn't purchase a standing order of 1500 VPS my affiliates too that previously had a standing order came short. They will just follow and it's so hard telling them hey! You need to get a standing order knowing very well you don't have one yourself. It's good to practice what we preach.
In ending lead by example and others will follow. Offer benefits...benefits...benefits to your down line. Once they see how well you are doing it and the benefits you have derived from your investing they will naturally follow.
