I think the best way to get them actively communicating with you is to use social networks particularly facebook chat. In my case I send messages to their inbox which is more liable to reading than mails. Most new affiliates are still getting a hang of SFI so it will be good to use IM especially for those who use mobiles.
Personally, I got very much interested in SFI with my sponsor using facebook chat.
Much said, you should contactthem where you know they are more often on the internet(skype,facebook,WhatsApp,YahooMessenger,G+,etc).
