Both are effective but it will varies person to person
If you are financially sound and time is factor to you then use paid advertisement. In paid advertisement you can write or add link as per your wish. There are no bindings. But in paid advertisement you may have to use an auto-responder if you are a very busy person and have no time to spare.
If you are financially challenged then use free advertisement. In free advertisement Social Networking Sites are very effective for SFI and Tripleclicks. It is my own experience as I have got so many affiliates through these sites. But there are some bindings in Social Networking Sites. You have to tactfully manage as per their norms and it is totally depending upon you to manage. There are so many free advertising sites other than Social Networking but they are free from outside. When you go inside or depth you will find they are demanding something in the name of Upgradation.
If you do business offline then paid advertisement is very effective to attract people but in case of SFI and TC you can easily avail free advertising sites specially Social Networking Sites which is very effective as SFI is a great internet home based business.
