I would tell them that they don't need to know that many people, My experience is that most of my friends are not interested so it is the same as not knowing a lot of people. They just need to learn how to advertise on-line, where to post ads with their gateways, how to advertise for free this is where they will get majority of affiliates not from their close friends.
