Great question to compliment the new 'Goal Setting' action.
Goals are achievements, targets or destinations. Although they sounds finite, goals in business should be open-ended so that we may expand on them once they have been reached.
Why are they so important?
Goals provide us with a structured framework from which we can build upon. Without them, we would be wondering around aimlessly without direction. For the moment, think of your business as an epic journey. In order to go far, we must set goals. The goals are our stepping stones...a place where we can take stock, analyse the things that have brought us to this point and use that data to plan our next step.
Goals provide us with drive and ambition, they give us a target to work towards. Without this, we're in danger of becoming complacent or even losing interest altogether. We must remember that the goal isn't the be all and end all. If we do not reach our goal at a specified time, we can either move the goal back or change its parameters. You set your goals so you can change them.
Goals also provide us with a sense of accomplishment. Achieving our goals is the perfect time to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. This will give us the motivation to move on to the next goal.
Motivation can be strengthened through reaching our goals. Just having a goal to work towards will conjure up the motivation we need to press on.
Finally, our goals should be shared. We should discuss our goals and the goals of our team members with our team members and help each other to reach them. This can be a very powerful trust building exercise and motivational tool.
