As a general rule, when dealing with the motivations of people, there really is no answer to the "Why" question. That is because even with all our commonalities we are still all our own unique individuals.
I joined SFI in 2001. I found it doing traffice exchanges. All of the sites that I used to see back then (and I know because I bookmarked them and they are still there in my bookmarks) are gone except SFI. Back then, I was looking for ways to make money fast. One HYIP actually made me some money, then, of course it disappeared and all the people I had told about it were quite upset with me. It was then I set up my Standing Order and let it ride for years, getting a monthly check (small). When that started to get smaller, I thought I needed to go elsewhere. Fortunately, I logged in and discovered all the training and marketing material that SFI provides. The light went on! This is a business! Not a system or a scheme! SFI is growing, and to make money we need to grow our business (not just have a standing order).
The promises are still out there when I check out the traffic exchange sites. If you read the fine print, even the ones promising $10,000 are not really promising that you will get it.
SFI is different! It is a business, with a business model and a plan. While it takes longer, building an income can even be developed without spending money. What I learned is that I can spend a little money and get large results. I don't know of any other online business that has that kind of potential.
I won't get rich, unless I help me team get rich. I think we're on the right track.
