An affiliate logs in after a long period of inactivity. Should I acknowledge this? And if so, what should I say?

Thats good news! It shows that the affiliate is still very much interested in SFI.
You should acknowledge him. Tell him that you that you've been looking out for him. Commend him for logging in. Tactfully inquire as to why he has not been logging all those while. You could say "was it because you were busy?". When you suggest like that it helps to draw out the mind of people and they will be more willing to open up. Depending on the response of the affiliate, offer an encouraging thought.
Finally, let the affiliate know that you are always there for him.

How can we get across to our affiliates that investing minor (at least) amounts of money into SFI is smart?

You should explain to them the benefit of making such investment in the first place. That would give them something to think about. Some of the benefits you can highlight are
1. Its helps to achieve EA status which is a requirement for earning income in the TripleClicks Executive Pool.
2. Investment in adverts and co-ops will help to build the affiliates downline which can furnish such affiliates with income for life.
and a host of other benefits.

Show them the relationship between SFI and TripleClicks. Help them to see that the too sites compliment each other. In addition, you should promote TripleClicks activities such as:
1. Pricebenders auctions.
2. T-time were an affiliates can win tcredits.
3. Pick the price contest were an affiliates can also win tcredits.
Above all else, what is the ONE THING that has made the difference for you in succeeding with SFI?

I would say the organization and orderliness in SFI has made the difference for me. From the SFI basics, Launch pad lesson and other tutorials and training just got me addicted to the program.In addition, fellow affiliates have provided me immense support by offering useful suggestions and advice.
From the beginning, I new that this is were I want to be.
