Why do so many affiliates become inactive shortly after joining SFI?

Can you count the stars in the sky? Can you count the grains of sand at the seashore? Of course not and the same holds true for the number of Internet money making schemes out there that promise something for nothing.
It seems that most people are on a constant search for that elusive "make millions just for signing up" deal. The promises made are so enticing and inviting that it becomes nearly impossible to see it when you finally find the real thing.
I am the perfect example. I am a third timer here at SFI. The first time I joined was in 1999. Yes, I was there close to the beginning. Then I got sucked away by some fast talking, self professed "guru." Then I came back, tail between my legs, in 2006 for about a year. Once again something else seemed better. Now here I am back again and I finally GET IT! --- after a full year of inactivity. My sponsor never gave up on me and I thank God for that every day. It's my business and I'm in it for the long haul.
So the answer to your question is: It takes the simple combination of a desire to succeed and a realization that a business does not build itself (especially not overnight) and certainly no one else is going to do it for you -- no matter how much you pay them!!! And if you never lose faith, some of those inactive ones just might surprise you some day.

How do you manage your team with many cultures and timezones to navigate?

Easy! I don't even try to navigate anything. Through the magic of the Internet I can send a newsletter or email, or post a stream and everyone on my team has access to it within a few minutes.
No juggling phone calls with time zones. No setting up conference calls so everyone can be there. If you wish to set up a Skype call with one or two parties it is a simple thing but overall I just allow the internet to do its' thing.
Now as far as culture is concerned, I simply embrace it. There is plenty of room under this big tent called SFI. Everyone has basically the same view of owning a business no matter where you live. And of course we have a translation tool on each page and we all have access to Google Translate for use in our emails.

Why is it important to visit the SFI forum daily?

A greater treasure trove of information has rarely existed.
Daily exposure to the knowledge of the top money earners in this world of SFI is a privilege not found in most businesses. It is separated into categories and topics so that you can easily find what you wish to learn about that day.
There are many times that I have had a question about a process or some other happening in the business and I have been saved the embarrassment of asking the wrong question of the wrong person.
Also I don't see any good reason to bother my very helpful sponsor and up line for basic questions about procedures in the business especially when everything has already been answered for someone, somewhere, so I can just learn from the very full database available to me in the forum.
My best advice is to not ignore any of the free and valuable tools available to you.

Is it worthwhile to create individual, personalized welcome letters to new PSAs using information from their Affiliate Profile?

I think this is something more easily determined by your individual recruitment style.
Some people recruit friends and “new friends,” and are very particular as to who and how many people are joining their team. Others use the spaghetti against the wall method. Sign up everyone in sight, and beyond, and those who stick are keepers/movers.
If you are of the former ilk you may very well want to personalize your welcome letters since you may know your new affiliates or at least have convinced them to fill out their profile as soon as signing up.
If, however, you do mass signups, either purchased or through your own marketing system it will be almost impossible to personalize anything until you see who is really interested and who are the “tire kickers.”
My own techniques vary so I have two or three general letters that I can easily edit for individuals as needed or do a mass mailing without sounding too regimented (making liberal use of the Genealogy mailers ~FIRSTNAME~ feature).

Should my ads link to my own webpage/blog...or to an SFI Gateway? Which is the best approach and why?

From a purely practical point of view I would suggest that you link to a SFI Gateway.
Most people have a very short attention span and you want them to learn about SFI and sign up with as few steps as possible. If you add another step to the process they may just zone out and click on to the next big thing before they reach the signup stage.
Also you may want to use Key Codes to track your marketing efforts. Separate Key Codes for the banners and ads that go to and from your personal website/blog as well as Key Codes for each of the Gateways you are using will soon tell you the answer to what you are asking.

Also as you are having fun you are getting much needed VersaPoints. One for each and every bid.
Just start out slow with one of the 1st timer auctions. Find something you really want and start bidding. I like auctions with no auto-bidder. It means people are paying attention and taking personal care for each and every bid.

How do you get new PSAs to commit to SFI?

This is, perhaps, one of the toughest hurdles to get over.
Many team leaders will gloss over the tough parts of our business and simply stress how easy it is to be successful in SFI. I, too, understand how simple it really is at it's core. However I have, of late, come to the conclusion that the "Drill Sergeant" approach is often more successful.
I'm looking for just a few good people. People who want to learn, work hard and build their own real online business. People who want to build a business for the long term and build a future that they can be proud of.
Just because they signed up for a "free" online business does not mean the money is just going to start flowing in. We're not going to fill up your 7×6 matrix downline (or whatever the latest lingo is..). There is no guarantee of success no matter how much money you want to invest. In fact you cannot "buy" your way into higher income levels in the company! The only way to become a Team Leader is to actually grow a team of more leaders.
This way the people who are not motivated will weed themselves out and those who are will be doubly excited. They will be teachable. They will work at learning and they will explore the SFI website to find the answers they require (it's all there).
And then, after they develop the proper work ethic, you can reveal (if they haven't figured it out for themselves) how truly easy our business is.

Less is more!
Often people (myself included) will try to oversell their product or business opportunity or, even, themselves.
Be concise. Be brief and to the point.
Why? Because most peoples’ attention span is very, very short. Also you may want to remember that many newspapers are written to the level of sixth graders.
So take a hint from the pros and keep it short and sweet.

The whole purpose of building a “team” is to develop “team leaders.”
Team Leaders are people who are Silver, Gold and Platinum Team Leaders in SFI. The life blood of SFI (and in turn your own business) are new Team Leaders.
Team Leaders in your downline produce more VP each month. Also Team Leaders make income for themselves making many happy team members.
How much time a day, approximately, do I need to invest in SFI to build a profitable business?

It kind of depends on what you are doing to “build” your business. If you are simply clicking through your “to-do list” you can get by with 20 - 30 minutes a day.
But since you mention the word “profitable” you will obviously want to do much more. It would seem that two to three hours a day is not asking too much if you wish to have a “profitable” business.
Ask yourself this. “If I had a part-time job, how many hours each week would I spend there (including travel time)?” My guess is at least the 21 hours I would suggest you work to build a business and a future for you and your family.
