How do you make SFI not be overwhelming for yourself and team members?

You have to follow the steps one by one. Do not try to read everything in a day or two. As is indicated in one of the Launch Pad ,just read two articles on training or just read few things only. Too much reading creates confusion. Do not try to become Platinum Team Leader without first crating a good team. Do not expect that you can start earning in thousands of dollars iin a very short time. This is not a get rich soon scheme.

Approaching family & friend is probably the first step for sponsoring affiliates.
If you are satisfied then it is easy to approach your friends & family because they are the people who know you & trust you.
You need not give them the complete details. Even if you tell them that you have read the details & the business is genuine,they will believe you & become affiliates.
The best place is family gathering or gathering of friends where the people are more & you can explain to all of them together.
You have one more advantage. since you know all of them so you can identify the people who will be interested in such type of business unlike advertising where you do not the nature of the people responding.
I am sure the ratio of active affiliates from the friend/family circle will be much more than what you get from other sources.

If you had to start over with SFI, having the knowledge and tools you have now that you didn't have before, what would you do differently?

First of all is the fast track. most of the affiliates just forget that they can get 200 VPs & another badge by getting 500 VPs within first 24 hours.
Secondly I will not rush to get all the VPs in the first month itself. I will try to adjust the way that I just become EA i.e get 1500 VPs without spending anything. Also get another 1500 VPs next month & become EA2 without spending anything.
Thirdly I will not try to get BTL or STL or GTL or PTL without first building a very good downline.

How do you present the SFI Compensation Plan to your group so that they are excited about working and earning with SFI?

The SFI Compensation Plan should be presented in such a way that the group understands it fully.
First you have to explain how the compensation plan works. What is Versa Point. How it is earned. What are the different methods of earning versa Points.
Then you have to explain what is EA,EA2,BTL,STL,GTL & PTL.
It is only after the group has understood the above concepts should you ask them to go through SFI Compensation Plan.
Then only the group will understand the advantages of becoming EA or EA2 or BTL or STL or GTL or PTL
