* The best way to help them is to send them Gift Cards if you can, or send them TCredits so they can convert it to MRP and buy Tcredit if they need more Versa Points
* If you have a Co-op you can send some PSA's their way to build their team.
* You can re-assign PSA's to them.
* Advise them where they can advertise for free.
*Encourage them to play games and educate them how that can help them.
* Reward them for logging in and doing as much as they could and should be doing without money.
* Send a gift certificate for $2, so that they can buy a Wave3 kit, which will give them all the freebies alongside.
* Give them upto 10 TCredits and whatever else you feel it is flexible for you to give in order to help them and you could support them.
* Tell them they can choose from thousands of products in SFI and sell them online.

Which is better and why...to contact my PSAs through SFI (e.g. PSA Mailer) or directly via their email address?

If you want to create personal contacts with your PSA specially at the beginning you will want to use direct email address.
For the beginners always send an e-mail. Many beginners do not manage to SFI account and you will need to send them a message on their e-mail to make sure that they are going to read it. Later, when you get a better contact with your PSAs, you can agree to how you communicate via e-mail, SFI messaging, social networks, etc. Be sure to use team mailer for important information you want to forward to all your members.
If you want to send a weekly newsletter, a blurb, or just a pep talk, then the PSA Mailer is fine. But if you really want your PSAs to get started or learn the ins and outs of SFI, then contact them personally via email.
There are options in the genealogy to send mails to your downline you can use any option...through Team-Mail, through e-Mail, or just through their chat when they are available.

First of all there's nothing like 'the best way'. Its all dependent to each individual's understandings, thinkings, and creative ideas. And to become a TL one must depend on SFI's homepage activities for a complete 30 days with the LAUNCHPAD each day.
Then the 2nd month onwards, no one needs to instruct him/her. Because that individual is completely ready for the BEST!
